German expressionism was a modernist movement the happened between World War I and World War II. It had a large impact on the film industry at the time. German expressionism made its way into America when the Nazi forced many of the film tycoons to leave the country. Most of them when to America and start making films in Hollywood. By migrating to the United States, the Expressionists influenced many artists and directors to follow in their path, creating Horror, Science Fiction, and Film Noir genres. German Expressionism is one of the single most influential movements in film and entertainment in general.
The painting on the right was the "Self Portrait with Hat" drawn by Karl Schmidt Rottluff in 1919. In here we can see that the still from The Maltese falcon is similar to the drawing. Firstly, both of them has a prevalent dark colour which is really common in German expressionist art and film noir.
