The movie Scream(1996) is a American slasher film written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Wes Craven. The story start with a high school girl Casey Becker receives a flirtatious phone call from an unknown person(Ghostface), asking her, "What's your favorite scary movie?" Then the situation get out of control and the killer became aggressive and threatens her life. He told her that her boyfriend Steve is being held hostage. If she want to save him she have to answer the questions correctly. Sadly she didn't get it right so Steve was executed. Then Casey refuses to cooperate with the killer, she is attacked and murdered by Ghostface, and her body is hung from a tree.
After that the killer shift the attention on killing one of the main character Sidney Prescott and her friends that come in his way. Turn out that the killers(Ghostface) are Sidney's boyfriend Billy and Tatum Riley's boy friend Stu. Both of them admit to be the killers of Sidney's mum, Maureen. Billy motivates was to seek revenge on Maureen because she had an affair with his father which drove his mother away.
The story of Scream was based on a true story of the Gainesville Ripper-Daniel Harold Rolling (May 26, 1954 – October 25, 2006) was an American serial killer who murdered five students in Gainesville, Florida. Rolling later confessed to raping several of his victims, committing an additional 1989 triple homicide in Shreveport, Louisiana, and attempting to murder his father in May 1990. In total, Rolling confessed to killing eight people. He was executed by lethal injection in 2006.
I think Scream is a turning point of horror movie because they put comedy and horror these two elements into one which is a marked change in horror genre. Also, it’s a parody of old horror films because if we look back to those horror movies in olden days such as Dracula(1931) we will find that hilarious even though people from that time think it was really scary. In the movie Scream they also mentioned The rules to succesfully survive a horror movie: You may not survive the movie if you have sex, You may not survive the movie if you drink or do drugs and You may not survive the movie if you say "I'll be right back", "Hello?" or "Who's there? which I think it's quite unique because the featuring characters were actually discussuing the cliché of real world horror films inside the movie"Scream was actually insipired by Halloween(1978)" and It is suggesting that sleeping around and under age drinking is bad.
